I never really played DOOM growing up. I tried the original when I was a kid but only in bits and pieces, so I didn’t have much nostalgia going into this. But I really enjoyed it.
The momentum is what makes it work. Arenas are lethal playgrounds where you chain glory kills, weapon swaps, and jump pads in continuous flow. It’s pure adrenaline from start to finish. Once it clicks you stop hiding. Health, ammo, and shields come from aggression, and every weapon has a purpose. Super Shotgun for elites, Gauss Cannon for precision, Chaingun for crowds. It rewards improvisation over cautious play, and the level design is fantastic. Mars and Hell bleed together. Secrets are tucked into believable spots instead of marked on checklists, and rune trials and Praetor suit upgrades feed back into combat.
This game rewards aggression instead of camping. You’re constantly moving, constantly engaging. The flow state you get into is addictive.
The story is pretty minimal. Datalogs are optional. You can dig into lore if you want or ignore it and shoot demons. Action comes first, and honestly that’s exactly how it should be for this type of game.
The soundtrack is incredible. Industrial metal that syncs with each arena, and the design is the star. Hell’s twisted architecture against Mars’ industrial stuff creates a visual contrast that works perfectly. Switch performance is okay but the game looks a little muddy.
Fast and brutal combat that still holds up perfectly in 2025. Really enjoyed my time with it!
